Setup guide

Set up your firstGradeThis workflow

Understand the hierarchy, create an assignment, import it into a section, and run grading with a clean review path.

Organization hierarchyGetting started
Platform model

Institution -> Department -> Course -> Section

Courses own assignment definitions. Sections own the live assessment run.

First build

Create, parse, approve

Use the wizard to create the first draft, then review extracted questions before you publish.

Section import

Linked, pinned, or forked

Choose how each section follows the course assignment before submissions begin.

Organization hierarchy

GradeThis separates authoring from delivery: assignments are created at the course level, then imported into sections where submissions, grading, and exports happen.

01

Institution

The top-level organization that owns departments, courses, and memberships.

02

Department

A subject area or administrative unit that groups related courses.

03

Course

The canonical home for assignment drafts, parsing, approval, and publishing.

04

Section

The live teaching instance where students submit work and instructors review grades.

Getting started

Move from assignment draft to section assessment in four deliberate steps.

1

Create the assignment draft

Use the wizard to choose a course, add the assignment details, upload the source file, and create the first draft version.

TipIf you launch from a course page, the course can be pre-selected in the wizard.

TipAfter the draft is created, parse the file, review the extracted questions, and approve the assignment before publishing.

2

Parse and approve the content

Run parse on the draft, inspect the extracted question graph, make edits where needed, and approve once the structure is accurate.

TipUse the file viewer and graph editor to confirm extracted questions and scoring rules.

3

Create the section assessment

From the target section, open Assessments and create a section assessment from a released assignment version. The assessment stays frozen to that version.

TipThe same released assignment version can be reused across multiple sections and offerings without changing existing assessments.

4

Grade, review, and export

After submissions arrive, GradeThis prepares AI-assisted grading for instructor review, then supports finalization and export.

TipEvery grading state change is recorded in the audit trail.

Frozen assessment versions

Each section assessment is created from a released assignment version and remains frozen to that version after creation.

Released source

Choose a released assignment version when creating the section assessment.

Frozen version

After creation, the section assessment does not automatically change when newer assignment versions are published.

Use a newer version later

If the assignment changes later, create a new section assessment from a newer released version instead of changing the existing one.
